Radio Station Progressivism

The last few weeks have been a formative period for "Big Words." Gene (who is now going through the steps to become a fully trained co-host) and I have been getting used to the feel and flow of a radio talk show - easing into the clothes, so to speak.

The major news to report, however, is that the campus radio station has finally gone to Low Power FM, and is no longer 104.7 WERU, but rather 99.1 WIKD. And while technically, I shouldn't be allowed past the gates into the greater Daytona Area, but since the station is obligated to fill a certain amount of air time, and there are slots available. So Ron, training director for the station, will be listening to the show on Sunday to make sure we're clear for Low Power FM.

After that, expect to be listening to "Big Words" at a new night and time!

Let's Call It A Dress Rehearsal

As is fairly well indicated by the zero comments, the show of the 23rd was not a roaring success in terms of dialogue-creating or controversy starting. Considering that the internet streaming was down, the speakers in the UC still aren't turned on, and WERU's non-Low Power FM is too weak to give the next room a good signal, I would be very suprised if a single person was listening. But, that's okay, since as I pretty much had expected and counted on, the first show was very much a dress rehearsal. And since I can be reasonably sure that my show had not a single listener, I feel safe in repeating the only part of my show that I had actually scripted, and finished in an astonishingly quick time of ten minutes. Incidentally, hopefully, this time, my audio will work as well.

As I've already mentioned, the best way to sum up the show of the 23rd is as a dress rehearsal. So, that said, next week's should be a ten-fold improvement. The internet streaming should be up and far from the show simply being me sputtering into the microphone all by myself, I'll have several people in the studio with me, including my good friend Anthony Vareha and also a good friend, Gene Schlesinger, Political Director for the ERAU College Democrats.

Speaking of which, the ERAU College Dems had our first meeting of the semester last night, and I encourage anybody who reads this and isn't already in the club to check out the website, www.eraucollegedems.org.

And remember to tune in Sunday at 5pm, and of course I'll put up the internet link as soon as it's available.

Finished Training

Today I started and finished the requisite training at the campus' radio station, so provided all goes well, I should have my show within the week.

Welcome to the official blog for Embry-Riddle's first and only liberal talk radio show, "Big Words" hosted by your's truly, Brian Finifter.

The genesis of this show came about during dinner conversation in the Student Center. My friend Travis, a DJ for WERU, mentioned that Sean Mahoney, the host for WERU's conservative talk show, "No Left Turns," was looking for a liberal to debate. I agreed and from there, the thought took hold in my mind about hosting my own talk radio show. With Travis' help, I started the process towards the end of the Fall semester, but finals came and the semester was over before I could get the requisite training on the equipment or be a guest on Sean's show.

However, with any luck, all of these things should be done at the the outset of the Spring semester and it shouldn't be long before "Big Words" is on the air.

And when it is, I hope you will tune in and listen and hear a point of view that all too often goes unheard at Embry-Riddle and in America. Until then, check back here for more information concerning not only "Big Words," but issues concerning politics, government, liberalism, the country, and the world. My goal for this blog is to provide a supplemental forum for information and discussion. I plan on posting source documents and articles that I use and provide a means for listeners to comment on what they hear.
